What are futures?
Futures are standardized contracts representingan agreement between two investors - one investor agrees to buy the contract, while another agrees to sell the contract at an agreed upon price at a specific time in the future.
Futures are available on a whole array of commodities, indices, stocks and bonds. Futures contracts are traded on exchanges around the world. There prices are determined by bids and offers in the marketplace.
Many futures contracts continue to be pit traded.
What are Stock index futures?
Stock index futures are futures that trade stock indices such as the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones.
What is an e-mini future?
E-mini futures are futures contracts that are traded electronically on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s GLOBEX. They are typically one-fifth the size of the larger cash market contracts. Electronic trading has helped to increase the liquidity of stock index futures and allows around the clock trading.
How do you trade an e-mini contract?
Investors can either buy a contract and go long (buy low and sell high) or sell a contract and go short (sell high and buy low). Trading of e-mini contracts are traded through various brokerages and can be traded from a computer, almost anywhere that has internet access.
What is the minimum movement?
With each type of futures market, the movement value varies. A tick is the minimum movement the underlying contract can move.
- the e-mini S&P 500 minimum fluctuation is 0.25 = $12.50 USD
- the e-mini Dow minimum fluctuation is 1 = $5 USD
How much money do you need to trade e-mini futures?
Each contract is different. But the majority require 5-15% Margin. Calculate contract size:
S&P500 e-mini = index price * 50 (example index = 700 * 50 = $35,000)
Dow e-mini = index price * 5 (example index = 6500 * 5 = $32,500)
Some brokerages require as little as $500.00 for active intraday traders.
What are expiry dates?
Each futures contract has an expiry date. We identify buying and/or selling opportunities during the duration of the contract and we exit our position prior to the expiry of the contract. Index futures are traded in the following expiry dates.
March – H
June – M
September – U
December – Z
What are the commissions for trading e-mini futures?
Electronic discount futures brokers usually charge $5.00-$15.00 round turn commission (in and out)
What are some of the different strategies of trading e-mini’s?
E-mini strategies vary greatly, usually utilizing one or more technical indicators. Eminisource offers various courses, from beginners to a Master’s Program to tutor the individual trader in finding a strategy that best fits.
How will the daily market profiles help me trade?
Our S&P and Dow daily market profiles highlight key levels that help determine the direction the market will go for the day. They also identify all the key support and resistance levels, rating them on their importance.
